Animation in 3D

By animation in 3D, we don't mean that you have to put on silly-looking glasses to view the animation.  For clients that want beyond the flat-screen 3D, we can make eye-popping stereo-rendered 3D animations (and you get to wear the silly looking glasses to view them).  But stereo rendered animations are typically not used in the courtroom.  When we talk about 3D animation, we are usually referring to the tools we use to create the animation.  They can be viewed on any computer screen or TV monitor.  3D animation techniques are used in ground vehicle and aviation accident reconstruction cases because 3D animations provide an excellent environment for simulation of an accident sequence during legal presentations. Behind the scenes, engineers and animators bring together a variety of different kinds of data from police reports and witness testimony, to information from flight data recorders into an animation in 3D. The combination of the convergence of information and the realistic visual product makes an animation in 3D a winning choice for many legal presentations.

Accident simulation is not the only use for 3D animations, especially at DI.We have used an animation in 3D in hundreds of patent cases including the landmark KSR v. Teleflex case. In KSR v. Teleflex DI experts created accurate virtual automotive foot pedals that were described in patents and other prior art, but had never been produced. Since DI’s 3D animations were the only evidence that could be shown in court for these prior art pedals, they were admitted into the record. Contact us if you are interested in learning how an animation in 3D can become substantive evidence.

Whether or not to use an animation in 3D for your  legal presentations depends more upon the specific case than the type of litigation. Construction disputes which often involve large sites and complex interdependent event sequences also benefit greatly from a skilled application of 3D animation. DI has also produced 3D animations illustrating cardiovascular defects and molecular interactions in biotechnology cases. Check out our animation library for ideas on how an animation in 3D may be useful in legal presentations. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. We would love to discuss how to effectively use an animation in 3D in your case...and our initial consultations are free.
